How clean & healthy are your carpets?
Hidden Visitors
The average American home contains a myriad of "allergens." Allergens are substances when inhaled by an allergic person, trigger allergic reactions such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, coughing and wheezing. Indoor allergens also play an important role in allergic diseases, such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. The major allergy causing substance in house dust is the dust mite. Each dust mite produces large numbers of waste particles, which become part of house dust.
What Are They?
Here are common allergens "hiding" in the home enviroment:
Dust
Mites are microscopic arachnids found anywhere there's dust. Just one gram of
dust can contain anywhere from 100 to 500 dust mites. Be sure to read about Chem-Dry's® Dust Mite Anti-Allergen.
Pet Dander is small scales of skin shed by animals.
Pollen
is the microscopic reproductive component of flowering plants and trees. It enters the
home from outdoors and is a common component of house dust.
Cockroaches unseen houseguests throughout America. Their body parts and droppings are
highly allergenic.
Where Do They Come From?
Allergens are constantly tracked into the home from outdoors. Some are present in the home because of pets, while others, such as mold, grow in damp areas. Research has shown that carpets in indoor environments act as a collector for these allergens. When carpets are not professionally cleaned regularly, these particles can become airborne.
D.C. Chemdry's Guide
to Maintaining a Healthy Home
The best way to reduce allergic reactions to dust, mold, and other indoor allergens is to reduce your exposure to them. Here are some tips for maintaining a healthy home environment:
Have your carpets and upholstery cleaned at least twice a year by D.C.Chemdry, or more often if you have children or pets.
Control moisture and humidity (60% humidity or lower) by using a dehumidifier or air conditioner.
Vacuum carpets, floors and upholstery three times a week using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA(high-effciency particulate) filter. Ask D.C. Chemdry for vacuum cleaner recommendations.
Sweep entrance mats regularly to reduce the amount of dust and soil tracked inside.
Have your heating and air conditioning system inspected and serviced twice a year. Use and replace high-effciency filters monthly.
Wash bed linens and covering weekly in hot(130°F) water.
Have mattresses and boxsprings professionally cleaned, then encase in allergen impermeable covers.(Ask D.C.Chemdry about mattress extraction services.)
Use a trained exterminator to eliminate cockroaches from the home. Keep food preparation, eating and storage areas clean and dry.
